I called Support - they essentially said since the software finishes its install that the problem is with Windows and that they cannot help. I happen to applaud this "error" as you put it. I managed to do a complete uninstall today and after several reboots I installed Avast Pro. So even if no real background scanning occurs, the antivirus drivers may still conflict with each other and cause your computer to freeze or crash.
